Australians are being asked to think about just how many locally made products they buy each week, as the inaugural "Australian Made Week" kicks off.

The campaign has been backed by former Block contestant Elyse Knowles, who discussed the importance of backing family-based businesses. (Australian Made Week).png

With consumers finding it difficult to import products into the country since the beginning of COVID-19, many local producers and businesses are stepping up to fill the void.

One of those businesses include Gold Coast-based gym equipment manufacturer AlphaFit, which currently employs 85 local staff.

Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive Officer Ben Lazzaro said he hoped the mindset being put forward this week will continue long-term into the future.

"If we have a concentrated period where we influence behaviour in the hopes that it becomes habitual," Mr Lazzaro told 9News.

"Just keep an eye out for that green and gold kangaroo and you can't go wrong."

Australian Made Week 2021 runs from 24 May to 30 May.
