WHO

All mums-to-be would agree that growing a tiny human in your belly can make a mess of your appetite. From pickles to ice-cream, the list of weird – but still super common - pregnancy cravings is seemingly endless. But model and environmental activist Elyse Knowles is currently experiencing one that’s all too relatable.

The 28-year-old, who is currently expecting her first child with her partner in business and life Josh Barker, tells WHO that she’s recently been suffering severe morning sickness – the kind only carbs can curb.

“During those first 8 or so weeks I was so sick I couldn’t even walk to the bathroom without feeling as though I was seconds away from throwing up,” she says. “The first trimester tested me big time! I was eating whatever I could simply to survive the nausea!”

Her daily go-to’s? “Bread, pasta and chicken rolls.”

“I’m on the cusp of wrapping up the first trimester so my appetite is still larger than normal for me,” she explains.

The Byron Bay-based beauty’s day on a plate differs depending on how she’s feeling week-to-week, but generally, brekkie involves locally baked sourdough topped with homemade pesto, avo and scrambled eggs.

For a morning snack, she’ll reach for Two Good Yoghurt (the vanilla flavour is her all-time favourite!) with fresh blueberries, almonds and sunflower seeds adding some extra crunch. Lunch is usually smoothie - or more bread - and in the arvo, she’ll chow down on crackers. For dinner, however, she always keeps the menu fresh.

“This meal differs every night as I love to cook,” she says. “At the moment I’m loving roast potatoes with salmon and salad. Potato-bake would be my current cheat meal. If it’s made from a potato, I’m all over it at the moment!”

As well as her standard food fare, Elyse’s exercise habits have changed a lot lately.

“Some days I’d wake up feeling ok so I would walk the dogs down to the park, but by the time we arrived, I’d have to bolt home to be sick. It was not a glamorous time!” she says. “Every week the nausea seems to improve so I’m now at the point where I can safely take the dogs for a long beach walk without fearing the worst!”

Now that she’s feeling better Elyse is moving her body once more – something she plans to keep doing “as long as its safe and feels comfortable” throughout the entire gestation period.

“I’m almost ready to get back into the gym as well which I’m really excited about,” she says. “I went from training 6 days a week to barely walking, so I feel that my body is craving some movement. It’s definitely the most important time for me to listen to my body, so I won't be rushing or pushing anything.”

She’s also fully embracing her newfound curves and admits she’s “loving the changes” that motherhood brings.

“It’s just so incredible how a woman's body can grow a human. It excites me every week to read about how the little person inside me is developing and it makes me burst with excitement to watch my belly grow! I feel very lucky.”

Just last week, the former Block star shared an up-close-and-personal photo of her growing bump on Instagram. “Tapping out for the day,” she captioned the selfie, which shows her lounging on the couch in a white button-up crop top, her swollen stomach bursting out of her jeans.

The couple, who became household names following their successful stint on the Channel Nine renovation reality show announced they were expecting while on holidays together in Alice Springs in August.

“And then there were 3 #babybarker,” she wrote at the time.
